Family Road Trip To Baltimore & DC
Sometimes last minute trips turn out to be the best ones. We recently planned a weekend getaway for Spring Break. When I tell you that I thought I had more time to plan, in reality I had about a week and a half. We ended up planning a day trip in Baltimore and then headed to DC for the rest of the weekend. We were so lucky that the weather was actually beautiful because back in Jersey it was cold. We laughed, explored new places and best of all did the it together.
Baltimore
Our first stop on our Family Road Trip was Baltimore Harbor. It was such a beautiful day and so many people just walking around and enjoying the outdoors. Plenty of restaurants to dine at especially the outdoor ones which are always my favorite when the weather is nice. There was music, paddleboats, The Historic Ships and the National Aquarium.
We ended taking the kids to the National Aquarium. The aquarium was pretty cool. I think what we liked was the layout of the aquarium. It was defiantly different compare to others that we have visited. Another cool feature was that they had jelly fish that you can actually touch and won’t sting. Of course you still have to be careful as you don’t want to hurt them. Both boys opted out in touching the jelly fish plus the area was a little crowded. We also got to see dolphins up close. We were surprise to see them in the aquarium and really enjoyed just watching them swim and be playful. It looks like the use to have shows but no longer offer them. We were able to come in and just watch them from the top of the tank and bottom viewing area. Marine life is really so fascinating and beautiful. We had a really nice time but wish we would have visited a lot earlier in the day as it was a little crowded for our liking. If your in the area or looking to plan a trip I would definitely recommend it but go as early as possible to get a full experience as we did miss somethings due to how crowded it was.
Washington, DC
This was our second time visiting DC for Spring Break. We stayed at the Hyatt Regency On Capital Hill again and have no complaints. We did a double queen and it was plenty of space for us four. The pool and gym were open but room service was not being offer this time around. But you still were able to order from your room and just had to go down to pick it up yourself.
We decided to visit the Smithsonian Natural Museum of Natural History this time around. The boys love all the Night at the Museum movies so they love to point things out that are similar from the movie. Of course the boys absolutely love the dinosaur exhibits and watching my little guy name them all before we can even read the information is mind blowing. We also saw a scientist at work. She was using a microscope to examine an artifact and produce a drawing without even looking at the paper. At first we thought she was fake but she was very much real. It was actually very cool to see.
There are so many museums to visit that but its just impossible to see all in a weekend. We didn’t make it to the Spy Museum like we planned because I forgot to purchase the tickets a head of time. A friend of mine who happen to go around the same time said that her kids loved it and was very cool. I share on some other cool and kid friendly places to visit in DC in a previous post that you can check out HERE.
After our visit to the museum we took a stroll to see the monuments. We even walked in the Reflection Pool! We could not believe that it was drained and also how deceiving it was. We thought it was a lot deeper. There were some areas that was going through construction so definitely make sure that the sites you want to check out are in fact open.
Over all we had a nice time and enjoyed the gorgeous weather outdoors. We definitely needed this mini getaway. Sometimes you just need a change of scenery to recharge. You don’t always have to spend a ton of money to travel. A mini road trip is always a good idea.
